I love to learn about other cultures, and living in Los Angeles has definitely given me many opportunities to do so. The Mexican holiday of Dia de muertos/dia de los muertos (Day of the Dead) is a cultural holiday I’ve been exploring more in recent years, especially after my friend, Jenna, invited me to Dia de los Muertos at the Hollywood Forever Cemetery.
I’m a self-taught calligrapher, and I’ll be the first to admit that my technique isn’t quite up to par…but this piece is still important to me because of the quotation. Samuel Johnson’s words were very helpful while I was practicing art therapy, and working through some personal issues.
What quotes or sayings have helped you through tough times?
This piece combines some of my favorite elements: calligraphy, water soluble pastels, red and yellow together, quotations and roses.
This quote also speaks to the heart of who I am. Having practiced a lot of art therapy, I know all too well how true this quote is.
Roses have long been my favorite flower to draw–I love the layers of petals and their curling edges. This was my favorite bloom from a gift of a dozen roses I received.
